How it all started
It was August 2011. We had lost a friend very suddenly, and his widow asked me if I would consider conducting the funeral as someone who knew him. I agreed and found the experience to be both challenging (as something I had never done before) but such a privilege and actually an uplifting experience, celebrating the life my friend had led. I also learnt a lot more about him!
And it went from there…..
Others over the years asked me to preside over the services for their loved ones too. With the age of the deceased ranging from 26 to 100, services have been varied and all have had their own character.
I have also had the enjoyment of conducting wedding ceremonies too, with my first being in Melbourne, Australia! Our friend had married an Aussie girl in the UK, and they were headed home so they could have a wedding ceremony that would include her parents. What a lovely day, such an atmosphere of love and hope for the future, and I counted myself very blessed indeed to be invited to lead it for them. Another wedding (much closer to home this time!) saw another couple come to me, who wanted a simple but heartfelt wedding ceremony. Incorporating both the groom’s grandmother’s bible, and his little grandson, it was a very different occasion, yet still full of the optimism, love and laughter we love to see when two people come together to pledge their lives to one another.
What next…..?
To take this all forward and make it my vocation, I knew that proper training was the answer. There is a lot of responsibility in leading such important moments in people’s lives and although I had some experience by this point, I knew it wasn’t nearly enough. So I enrolled with the Celebrant Circle and undertook their training course which was invaluable to me. Aside from realising I still had much to learn, the advice and ongoing support I have simply makes me a better Celebrant…..
And finally……..Sunbeam…..?
Why choose the name ‘Sunbeam’?
Well, I wanted a name that was reminiscent of all-things positive. Now, my aim with all the ceremonies I get involved with is to inject as much light, love and positivity as I possibly can. When that is a wedding, vow renewal or baby-naming, that’s usually easy to do!
Finding the positive amidst grief however, is a real challenge. But there is still no reason why my own light can’t shine, in the comfort and assurance I give to those I work with, that we will create a ceremony together we can be proud of.
And there you have it. Me. One of life’s sunbeams!
So, whatever chapter of life you find yourself in, get in touch for a chat, to see how I can help. I look forward to meeting you…..
